THE NEW R9 DETECTOR by RECCO AB

Published by admin at 9:00 am under Skiing and Alpinism   2,749 views

recco logoAfter more than two years of development RECCO AB introduced their new R9 detector at the October meeting of the International recco avalancheCommission for Alpine Rescue.

The new detector marks a significant leap in innovation and technology for rescue services in the search and rescue of buried avalanche victims. This new detector – ninth generation – is an innovative rescue tool that combines the two best search technologiesdirectional radar and traditional rescue beacon receiver – into one compact, lightweight, hand-held unit. The new detector allows a single rescuer to perform both a RECCO search and a beacon search simultaneously. The ability to perform both the beacon search and RECCO search at the same time is a significant benefit early in the rescue when only a few rescuers must search large areas.

Combining technologies makes rescue more efficient and faster.

Furthermore, technological enhancements make the R9 detector significantly smaller and lighter. About the size of a school book the new detector is half the size, and at 900 grams, nearly half the weight of the old detector.

Starting around the New Year RECCO will begin to equip rescue services around the world with

the R9 detector. The plan is to equip both existing and new resorts and rescue teams with more of these smaller, lighter detectors. With more detectors – strategically positioned – rescue teams will be even better prepared for when Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.

Doesn’t this seem like people will think they are protected when in avalanche areas by simply wearing the Recco clothing and assume somebody will come looking for them with the locator unit?

    Hi Doug,

    I don’t think so.

Please read it again: “The RECCO® system is not a substitute for an avalanche beacon. Complementary in function, the system is an additional tool for rescue teams that does not interfere with avalanche dogs, beacon searches or probe lines.”

    Hi Mike,

The Recco system is not designed for companion rescue and is not an alternative to transeiver use in the backcountry and therefore not available to private people.
The Recco detectors are only available to organised rescue teams and resorts.
