We had the opportunity to visit the the new F30 Brio Ultralight Aircraft production at the Golden Car premises.

Designed by the famous Ing Stelio Frati, the aircraft target is the top of technology and design in the field of ultralight certificated aircraft.

Golder Car, a company specialized in the production of shells and accessories for luxury cars, has launched the aeronautics division to exploit the internal distinctive skills for the ultralight aircfraft market.

Silvio, the F30 test pilot, shows us the entire production process fully industrialized, rom the inventory where all the details (from the last fuselage rivet used) are maintained on a CAD software systems, up to the molds and tooling internally made.

The attention to detail is very high: all the pieces are mounted using precision instrumentation according to the Ing Frati project.

We explored the heart of the production center where we met the company owner, which illustrates the meticulous care in the parts assembly and especially the optimal solutions identified to provide the maximum aircraft safety.

The plane shell is entirely made of aluminum. The wings are a single block connected with an uppercut that has passed the esistance test up to 6g.

Silvio shows us a wing in the courtyard completely destroyed by resistance testing. The profile of the wing is impressive for the aluminum plates that make up the entire length without interruption at all.

We analyzed some details, including the cart: they are entirely made of titanium alloy to minimize the weight impact. A very nice solution is used for the tank: completely anti burst it is placed inside a basket with the best safety features on the market.

Even the electrical system follows the same attention, exclusively realized with aeronautical materials.

The control panel is also a masterpiece: mounted on a titanium alloy engine capable to accommodate both analog instruments and glasscockpit in the deck configuration according the the customers requirements.

The initially expected engine is the robust and proven Rotax 100: a certainty in this area.

The flight tests show a good mix of sprightliness that offers the possibility to use the aircraft for the most demanding drivers, along with enormous stability able to recover easily trim even in case of maneuvers such as stalls and spins. The aircraft can be painted in the oven directly at the factory or by the buyers themselves.

Golden Car deliveres the aircraft together with the flight manuals, maintenance and checklists, while in March it will start the process for obtaining the certification in Germany.

A few kilometers away from Sant’Agata Bolognese, Bologna and Maranello headquarters respectively of Lamborghini, Ferrari and Ducati, you can find the Flygas HQ.

Flygas is a company specialized in innovative KIT engine ultralight aircraft delivered worldwide.

Flygas built and patented a dual supply system Electronic fuel injection which supports the now tested and safe plant carburettors ensuring all the advantages of electronics injection.

As it is well known to all pilots the usage if carburettors ensure a simple, robust and well tested solution. The calibration of the power system occurs as the average of the mediating parameters on the cylinder of the engine cold and the basis of climatic conditions and altitude medium.

The pilot have to manage during the flight the mixture emaciated due to power share rather than the warm air to the carburetor to prevent the ice formation.

The injection is able to effectively manage all the parameters that are electronically varied moment to moment to ensure the best system in accordance with the environmental conditions, altitude, temperature etc…

On the other way the injection is related to the electronics, that, in the event of electrical failure, would inevitably stop the engine.

The kit of Flygas layer supports both technologies by creating a system that allows Redundancy as benefit from the injection can still count at any time (in flight) on the traditional system carburetors.

The benefits of this kit can be summarized as follows:

• Dual fuel system: electronic injection and carburettor \ i as an element of redundancy

• Valve undergoing patenting to switch between the two types of food.

The switch is operated by theflygas4 pilot with the operation simple, quick and instinctive of a button

• The Power System original carburettors undergo no change. It ‘always available in case of problems.

• If you planted the engine, or any other emergency, the ‘landing will take place with the installation of gas 3 bar pressure completely emptied

• Avoid the formation of ice

• Increase in power during the winter due to low temperature that is no longer heated

• Reduce consumption and increase the autonomy

• carburation adjusted basis all”altitudine

• Banks always balanced, regardless of the difference in opening of carburettors

• Ability to continue to fly (50% power) in case of breakage of a cable control of a carburetor.

• Single-cylinder perfectly carbon independently from each other

• Avoid the risk of gas leakage in oil, during the visit.

• Ability to create a fuel reserve in case of errors in filling

• In winter, more power, due to the low temperature that is no longer heated flygas5

For Rotax 914 turbo engine, dual power solves the problem of the decline of power established by the command unit waste-gate, following the passing of frequent air temperature nell’airbox.

So for those who want to turn your engine on a twin-engine power and fuel injection should not do is to equip its aircraft with the KIT Flygas.

The kit consists of 13 elements: 1 electronic control unit, a wiring harness, 4 injectors, 1 distributor valve, 1 manual Swich integrated absolute pressure sensor 1 “MAP”, 1 fuel pressure regulator, 2 intake manifolds, tubing and fittings “Aeroquip” aero, 1 fuel pump 3 bar.

Optionally you can install:

• Dual redundant Swich

• Potentiometer in the cabin to change carburation

• Sonda lambda

• Throttle position sensor TPS ”

• Probes “k” to see the exhaust temperature.

• Buyers and data dashboard for monitoring data from a distance.

In order to understand more, we have interviewed Giuseppe Sabatino, pilot AG (General Aviation) and VDS (Sport Flight).

Giuseppe, how are classified the drivers who engage in this new discipline?

“Bush Pilot is the term that qualifies a pilot at the controls of an airplane equipped for the STOL features (Short Take Off Landing), so able to land over every type of terrain.”

Why Bush? I guess it is not related to the former president of the USA, right?

“Of course it isn’t. Bush is the English term that stays for the small tree in this case. The bush pilots are able to land in the beds of rivers, on the stony ground, over the snow fields, glaciers and generally on every not prepared surfaces. The bush pilot is an expert with a workout, but also the means used must be modified and turned into a bush plane. “

What are the distinguishing characteristics of an airplane designed for the Bush Flying?

“The most used bush plane are the ultralight biciclos, normally equipped with tires specifically designed and clearly identified by big size and shape.”

Where is from the technology invented for this new “philosophy of flight?

“Surely the leaders are the Alaskan Bushwheels ™: This is the brand that identifies the strange gums produced by a single company in the world established in Alaska. It is a low tire pressure to maximize the ground shocks absorption while preserving the truck, the fuselage and the pilot. Their large plant ensures a good grip for every surface and there are different measures according to different aircraft categories. The diameter for an ultralight aircraft in this category can be up to 29 inches (73.66 cm). “

After the prevous Digifly Cartesio PRO BT review let’s analyse today the new Leonardo Pro Flight Instrument.

The Digifly Leonardo Pro has an integrated high sensitivity 20 channel SIRF III GPS receiver. With a high power, fully independent, double battery make the Leonardo Pro the right choice from Digifly for full management of competition waypoints and routes, including FAI cylinder turnpoint and start pilon validation. With telemetry output.

Pilots familiar with Digifly flight instruments love the sensitivity and speed of response of the our varios. All Digifly varios use the Intellivario Technology, a revolutionary system designed by Digifly which is based on the use of sophisticated digital filters to process information from the pressure sensor. This results in a a very sensitive vario which is also immune to radio interference. Uniquely, the Intellivario system is fully adjustable, allowing pilots to adjust the sensitivity their varios depending on the flying conditions.

The Leonardo Pro‘ buttons are clearly labeled, so users new to Digifly will quickly feel at home navigating the setup menus and the three main display screens on this new vario. The large, clear LCD screen also makes for easy observation in flight and the new high power audio on the front panel means that pilots will have no difficulties hearing the loud vario tones.

Three fully customisable main display screens on the Leonardo Pro provide the pilot with as much (or as little information) as they require. Automatic switching between the Thermal Display Screen and the Glide Compass or Glide Plotter Display Screens is handled by the onboard Intelliflight software, which detects if you are thermaling or on a glide.

Comprehensive “Speed To Fly” information using data from both the integrated high sensitivity 20 channel SIRF III GPS receiver and the optional Digifly Air Speed Indicator unit will help the you make the correct piloting decisions at critical points in your flights.

The Leonardo Pro has a double battery system. The main power is supplied by an internal rechargeable lithium battery (supplied as standard) with a full recharge time of only 3 hours. This battery has no memory effect, so it can be be partially recharged, it also has a very low self discharge rate (more than one year) and works very well at low temperatures. Battery life ranges from 30 hours to 200 hours depending on whether GPS has been activated.

The Leonardo Pro has a non-rechargable 1.5 volt AA size backup battery. This battery is situated in the removable battery “slot” and can also be replaced with other 1.5 volt AA size batteries. Rechargeable batteries can be used, though are not recommended for the backup battery system because of their high self discharge rate (after 2 months they are completely discharged and useless). If using a rechargable backup battery, note that this battery is not recharged by the instrument but has to be removed and recharged externally by the user. The backup battery life ranges from 20 hours to 200 hours depending on whether GPS has been activated.

The auto start 3D flight logger (of both flight and GPS data) can store up to 100,000 data points from your flights. The unique flight playback display mode (Moviola) allows you to play back your flights on your vario. PC connectivity, via the optional Digifly USB PC cable allows the download of your flight data to your PC for later analysis.

The Leonardo Pro has high speed (10 times per second) telemetry output. This is a new very powerful function that sends your flight information in “real time” to external equipment e.g. Palm, Pocket PC or your even to your mobile phone by the serial or USB cable. Data can be sent to external equipment e.g. for car navigation, remote tracking of pilots, alarm SMS alarm messages for “search & rescue”, CompeGPS for Pocket PC, mobile phones and many flight programs running on Palm, Pocket PC and Cellphone (available free on the internet).

The Leonardo Pro software can be updated via the optional USB PC cable allowing you to keep your flight instrument right up to date with the latest software improvements from Digifly. There is also extra peace of mind with an extended 3 year warranty.
